Abstract

The relationship between the tendency to crust development and the content in water stable aggregate(Kemper and Rosenau method)is studied in 35 soil samples from different lithological areas of the Comunidad de Madrid. The two crusting indices used, the FAO – PNUMA index and another one modified from the former, have very low relationship to the percentage of water stable aggregates when we consider all the 35 samples together but some tendencies and differences appear when we group the soils according to their parent materials.

Key words: Crusting index; aggregate stability, lithology; silt; organic matter.
