Abstract

Many investigations have been conducted to determine relative dielectric constants (Er) for soils. Most of these studies have been conducted on soil samples in laboratory and none of these investigations studied the soil Ers in natural field conditions and related this information to ground-penetrating radar depths. Therefore, the objectives of this research were to (1)determine soil Ers under field conditions, and (2) determine the depth of radar penetration in selected soils using the calculated Ers. The results indicated that the Ers ranged from 3 to 12.3 in the twenty mineral soils and from 59 to 71 in the organic soil studied. The range in Ers values for most of the soils studied was less than expected from the variability observed in soil properties. Use of the actual Ers did change the estimated depth of radar penetration. For the limited range of soils studied, the depth of radar penetration could be determined with more accuracy.
