Abstract: The validity of equations used to predict SO42- sorption parameters for Langmuir and Freundlich isotherms was tested. The equations were derived in a previous study, in which the parent material was used as the criterion for aggregating characterization data of soils from A Coruña (NW Spain). Soils from Ourense (NW Spain), derived from acidic parent material, were used to validate the different models. There was significant correlation between all of the observed and fitted potential SO42- sorption data (P<0.01). However, a trend of decreasing the r values (from 0.86 to 0.67) was observed when the heterogeneity of the data base used in the development of the equations increased. Furthermore, comparison of the means of observed and fitted data by a Student’s t test confirmed that when soil data were aggregated without distinguishing between acidic and basic parent materials, the accuracy of the prediction tended to decrease.
