Abstract

This study proposes the feasibility of bioconversion of dry olive cakes throughout a vermicomposting process. For this purpose a laboratory experiment was conducted using 0.3 kg of this by-product, alone or mixed n with cattle manure or municipal biosolids, inoculated with 5 non-clitellated earthworms (Eisenia andrei) and maintained under controlled conditions for 160 days. Earthworm growth was optimal in the different substrates, therefore, the agricultural quality of the dry olive cakes improved appreciably. end product (vermicompost) improved appreciably. The final products (vermicomposts) had higher humification rate and nutrients content, lower pH and were not phytotoxic, fulfilling most of them the Spanish guidelines for compost.

Key words: Dry olive cake, vermicomposting, chemical changes, humification, phytotoxicity
