Abstract

Sewage sludge and municipal solid waste (MSW) are a useful source of nitrogen, phosphorus and organic matter applied under appoved conditions.

Land application of sewage sludge and MSW, represent and alternative use for the disposal of organic wastes.

The main purpose of this study is the reduction of the content of heavy metals in the sewage sludge (coming from the depuration process which takes place in the city of Burgos) and the MSW (from Burgos) obtaining organic waste which could be used as a soil conditioner and fertilizer.

In this paper the heavy metals were extracted from sewage sludge and MSW with Na2H2P2O7 , 0.1 M (from pH 2 to pH 11). The best reduction percentages of heavy metals were obtained for sewage sludge a pH 2 and for MSW in all pHs.

Key words: sewage sludge, municipal solid waste, organic matter, heavy metals.
