Abstract. This paper reports the results of macromorphological, analytycal and typologic study of six soils profiles developed on different volcanic rocks under mediterranean semiarid climatic conditions. In spite of the low precipitations and the parent rock moderate alteration, soils with a mollic epipedon have been formed. These soils have been classified as Phaeozems (FAO-ISRIC-ISSS 1998). On the other hand, we stand out the necessity to include the group of the Calcaric Phaoezems in this classifications which was eliminated some time ago and, however, they are soils appearing with a certain frequency in the peninsular southeast.

Key words: Phaeozems, mollic epipedon, volcanic soils.
