Abstract. CPMAS 13C-NMR organic matter composition and transformation in an histosol of ‘Serra do Xistralí (North of Galicia, Spain): preliminary results. The composition of the organic carbon of a fibric histosol from the north of Galicia was studied using high resolution CPMAS 13C-NMR. With increasing depth (age), a continous decrease in the carbohydrate content and an increase in aliphatic-C was observed. After a slight increase in the upper centimetres of the peat, the aromatic and phenolic-C compounds reach a nearly constant value. A similar behaviour was observed for metoxilic and carboxylic-C. The observed evolution of functional nmr groups, particularly that of hydroxyl and aliphatic-C, shows that after 4000 years a stabilization of organic matter has not yet been reached. From the comparison with data obtained in other peat bogs from different latitudes, a general trend to a similar end point of evolution can be deduced.

Key words: Histosol, peat evolution, organic matter, functional nmr groups, Galicia.
